Family Foundations

Over the past two decades, CHP&M has witnessed a dramatic increase in the creation of family foundations and family-based charitable institutions. And for more than twenty years, CHP&M consultants have worked with many of these families as they begin their philanthropic journey. Initially, we consult with families as they consider forming a foundation. The relationship continues as the program, staffing, and governance systems are put into place. Throughout the process, CHP&M serves as partners, counsel and guides to families. Our work focuses on:

  • Establish the mission and program strategy
  • Developing organizational systems and structure
  • Leadership assessment and development
  • Strategic planning
  • Succession planning and engaging the next generation
  • Improving board/staff communication and intergenerational communication
The creation of a family foundation is an extraordinary opportunity, but often a challenging undertaking. When family members make the commitment to create and sustain a foundation, they also must commit to the effective operation of this special legal entity. Often, family history and relationships impact the way the foundation is initially formed and how it operates over time. Understanding these factors and ways to manage their influence is important to the long term health of the foundation and the family's involvement in it.

As consultants and facilitators, we provide seasoned and balanced guidance to both family members and foundation staff as they develop effective organizational options to move the foundation forward.
